The Eastern Townships region is the southernmost tourist region in the province of Québec.
It borders the United States, and you can even visit a concert hall that overlaps the border!
The first inhabitants to settle in the region were the English loyalists, the Scottish, and the
Irish, who were soon followed by the French Canadians, the Dutch, the Swiss, the Belgians, the
Polish, and the Germans.
This region is located in a magnificent setting, dotted with imposing mountains,
lakes dating back from the last glaciations, rivers, and large forested areas.
It profits from a great ecological diversity, not only for wildlife, but also for
natural resources, like copper and zinc. The region also became popular with its sawmills and its railroad.
The Eastern Townships region conceals remnants from the past, such as round barns, which
were built to resist fierce winds, or covered bridges, which were built with a round roof that
allows them to extend their life duration. The religious heritage of this region is highly
diversified. In fact, people can visit more than a hundred churches from all denominations.
In the Eastern Townships, you can also visit a college town: Sherbrooke, which is the 7th
largest city in the province. Lennoxville, which is now one of the districts of Sherbrooke,
and the city of Sherbrooke itself, both have their own universities. Bishop’s University,
in Lennoxville, is an Anglophone university and is also one of the oldest and smallest
universities in Canada with only five halls. The Université de Sherbrooke, for its part, is
renowned for its science and computer science programs. Take a walk on the campus to take in
the energy from students!
In this region, visitors will find a large variety of activities for everyone. No matter the season,
national parks and tourist stations welcome visitors and offer a vast array of activities for the entire
family. A well-developed 500-kilometre bike path network and a number of cross-country skiing paths will
make cross-country skiers and bikers happy. Local products are also very popular, because the region has many
vineyards and orchards. More than 130 festivals and events take place during the year, for the great pleasure
of tourists and people from the region.
